Current Hospital News - Proposal to Build New Hospital 2009-2010

Hedrick Medical Center... click image to see a closer view!Hedrick Medical Center is a licensed 49-bed hospital owned by the city of Chillicothe and leased by Grand River Health System. Hedrick Medical Center participates with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services as a critical access hospital, which restricts its maximum number of beds to 25. The critical access hospital program is vital component of the hospital’s ability to continue to upgrade equipment and maintain high-quality facilities.

Grand River Health System is a corporation whose sole legal member is Saint Luke's Health System. Grand River Health System has leased Hedrick Medical Center since 1996 when it was created as a partnership between two area health systems. Saint Luke's Health System assumed responsibility for Grand River Health System in August 2003 and holds the current lease.

HMC is a regional health care facility providing state-of-the-art health care to patients in Livingston County and an eight county region of North Central Missouri. HMC is one of eleven hospitals that make up the Saint Luke’s Health System.

With over 300 employees, Hedrick Medical Center features a 24-hour Emergency Department, primary care clinics, inpatient acute and rehabilitation care, a full-service obstetric department, inpatient and outpatient surgery departments, a broad array of outpatient diagnostic testing capabilities, outpatient rehabilitation services and home care and hospice services to provide the best care to patients throughout their lives.

As a member of Saint Luke’s Health System, HMC strives to provide world-class health care in a local, compassionate environment. Our physicians, nurses, technicians, and employees are dedicated to being the best place to get care in Northern Missouri. Hedrick Medical center is a city-owned, not-for-profit hospital and healthcare facility that is designated as a Critical Access Hospital. HMC is the only Joint Commission accredited hospital in Northern Missouri and under Mr. Johnston leadership in 2005 was named by Solucient as a “100 Top Hospital – Performance Improvement Leader”.

The Board of Directors of Grand River Health System is comprised of 12 individuals, including five community members, five physicians, and two Saint Luke's Health System representatives.

A new lobby was constructed in 1999. (13247 bytes)The Grand River Health System Corporation, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, makes annual lease payments to the City of Chillicothe and the city is responsible for capital improvements at the hospital. During 2006-2007, the City made many updates on the hospital campus including new space for the nuclear medicine department, new space for the Hospital Auxiliary’s gift shop, a new waiting room for expectant families, and a complete remodel of the Radiology department. Additionally, annual repairs to non-medical equipment totaled $300,000-400,000. The Hospital and City meet annually to discuss needed repairs and updates to ensure that the hospital campus remains a safe and attractive place for patients to receive medical services.

In addition to the medical service which the hospital provides, Hedrick Medical Center is the community's second largest employer. HMC employs the equivalent to 265 full-time employees. The hospital's annual net revenue is approximately $32 million and the facility disburses $12 million in payroll. In 2007, the hospital recorded 950 inpatient admissions for a total of 3,400 inpatient days and had 31,000 outpatient visits. There were 4,100 home health visits and 8,600 emergency room visits. The hospital delivered 225 babies in 2007 and expects to deliver nearly 250 babies in 2008. The hospital also saw over 14,000 patients for primary care services in the Chillicothe Medical Clinic and Chillicothe OB/GYN Associates, both hospital-based physician practices.

Hedrick Medical Center Adds New Information Technology
C-T News Article, March 25, 2008

Hospital will soon be all-digital

CHILLICOTHE, Mo. – On March 3, Hedrick Medical Center took the first step toward incorporating the same information technology that drew President Bush to a sister hospital, Saint Luke’s East–Lee’s Summit in Lee’s Summit, Mo. As part of Saint Luke’s Health System, Hedrick Medical Center’s new advanced technology represents a system initiative to provide the same quality-based clinical practices at all Saint Luke’s hospitals.

The new computer systems make patient records, radiology images, and lab work computerized and instantly accessible to any member of the patient’s health care team at most Saint Luke’s Health System hospitals.

“This new system streamlines our ability to care for patients with timely access to patient history and test results.,” said, Hedrick Medical Center’s D.J. Clow, OB/GYN.

Hedrick Medical Center is the first critical access hospital within Saint Luke’s Health System and the first non-metropolitan hospital to integrate with Saint Luke’s award-winning information systems platform. Regional hospital integration will further establish a seamless flow of patients across Saint Luke’s Health System. State-of-the-art digital hospitals such as Hedrick Medical Center standardize processes and automate evidence-based care throughout the health system to improve clinical outcomes and reduce variability in the cost of care.

“The continued evolution of Hedrick Medical Center is absolutely expressed in this digital transformation,” said Brian Johnston, Hedrick Medical Center chief executive officer. “The commitment of our Board of Directors, our Medical Staff, and our employees to deploy these advanced technologies in a small, rural hospital speaks to the passion that we all share to be ‘the best place to get care, the best place to give care.’”

As part of this transition, the hospital upgraded its laboratory, pharmacy, and radiology equipment to state-of-the-art standards and is capable of not only sharing information throughout the health system, but within the scope of services provided at Hedrick Medical Center, provides care at the same level as our sister facilities in Kansas City. The hospital will continue to deploy advanced technologies in the coming years including an electronic ICU system this April.

Cardiac Telemedicine Now At Hedrick Medical Center
C-T News Article by Megan Neis

Members of the Livingston County Foundation recently gathered at Hedrick Medical Center to view a live demonstration of the new cardiac telemedicine equipment at the hospital. The foundation donated 50% of the funding for the new equipment which allows for a cardiologist in Kansas City to examine a patient in Chillicothe. Funding for the grant was obtained from the Noble Dean Smith Trust account.
