Lymphedema can be debilitating and disfiguring, but patients at Hedrick Medical Center now have the option of treatment though the hospital’s Rehabilitation Services department, located in Park Center Shopping Plaza.
Lymphedema is an accumulation of lymph fluid that causes swelling in the affected area (usually a limb). Lymphedema may develop following surgical removal of lymph nodes for melanoma, breast, gynecological, or prostate cancers, often combined with radiation treatments. The disease may also be caused after the body has endured a major trauma or surgery. Lymphedema affects both men and women of all ages, including infants.
Though lymphedema can’t be cured, quality of life can be greatly improved with treatment. HMC lymphatic therapists Tina Jones, P.T., and Amy Moore, P.T.A., now provide a specialized service to treat this condition, known as manual lymph drainage complete decongestive therapy. The treatment includes techniques such as manual lymphatic drainage, skin care, specialized compression bandaging, measurement and fitting of compression garments, an exercise program, and patient education.
