U.S. Highway 36 is now four-lane across Missouri. A dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Saturday, July 10, 2010, in Macon, Missouri. The event marks the completion of the last 52 miles of the highway to be four-laned. Supporters say having four lanes across the state means greater safety and enhanced economic development. U.S. 36 stretches about 184 miles between St. Joseph on the west and Hannibal on the east. Pictured at left is the new highway 36 bridge which opened in August, 2002. Of approximately $969 million earmarked for highways and bridges in Missouri each year, $737 million annually will go for road and bridge projects across Missouri. Of that, $400 million will be spent for the upkeep of existing roads and bridges, including $100 million for interstates statewide, $275 million for non-interstate highways, and $25 million for safety projects.

Chillicothe is also home to a municipal airport. Consisting of 272 acres with a paved runway and a grass runway, the airport is located three miles east of Chillicothe's city limits on Highway 36. A new runway will run north, northeast to south, southwest, allowing planes to land from any of the four directions and will allow for safer landings in various weather conditions.
