What is 55 & GO?

55 & GO (Formerly RSVP) is a Volunteer Program that provides volunteer opportunities for persons age 55+. The purpose of 55 & GO is to enrich your life through significant community service work. 55 & GO encourages you to bring your talents, experiences, skills and hobbies to community projects and organizations needing volunteer assistance. Who Can Be a 55 & GO Volunteer?

Any man or woman 55+ who wants to share the benefits of their experiences is eligible. There are no restrictions based on education, income, race, color, creed, sex, handicap or experience. Anyone who wants to feel useful, needed, and appreciated will profit from becoming a part of the 55 & GO network.

55 & GO Fits Your Schedule

55 & GO strives to maintain flexibility in the scheduling of assignments. There is no minimum number of service hours. Assignment hours vary according to the needs of the agencies, but you may select an assignment that suits your schedule. We realize that you may have plans to do things that might conflict with your volunteering. If you want to alter your volunteer work schedule due to conflicting plans, just notify your station and the 55 & GO Office in advance.

What Do 55 & GO Volunteers Do?

55 & GO Volunteers serve, without pay, on community assignments at museums, hospitals, libraries, senior centers, social service agencies, nursing homes, schools, and many other nonprofit organizations. They visit shut-ins, assist in the delivery of Mobile Meals, and work with children and youth. They act as office workers, tutors, and volunteer coordinators. Some provide services to seniors.

55 & GO Volunteers serve on a wide variety of community boards and have been responsible for several pilot programs developed in Livingston County. They use their skills in journalism, law, health, education, and many other areas to benefit our county. A number of Livingston County 55 & GO Volunteers have served and currently serve on local, county, and state boards.

Reporting Hours

Volunteers report their hours on a monthly basis, usually through the volunteer station. Many volunteers serve in more than one capacity. Crediting your volunteer hours to different groups is perfectly OK. Suppose you are a hospital volunteer, a retired teacher, and also a member of 55 & GO. Each organization needs to know how many hours you gave for its purposes. So, if you are a part of several volunteer groups, support them by reporting your hours faithfully to each one and then reporting your total hours to 55 & GO.

You may not be aware that you can turn the time you spend doing a wide variety of things into us. Of course you should turn the hours you spend working for any of our official 55 & GO Stations (listed below). You can also turn in time you spend helping an elderly neighbor, visiting anyone at a nursing home, telephoning an elderly person to check on them, time you spend as a member of a service club or organization, any nonpaid service you do for a public or private non-profit organization or proprietary health care facility, and work you do through your church except preaching and teaching.
