Utilities

Water, sanitation, and electric services are available through the Chillicothe Municipal Utilities. FEC Companies provide services to rural customers. Liberty Gas operates the local natural gas distribution network.

Chillicothe Municipal Utilities is owned by the people they serve and supplies its customers with electricity, water, sewerage, and refuse collection services. CMU is governed by a Board of Public Works, which is a non-partisan body appointed by the mayor.

Supplying reliable electric service to the residents of Chillicothe since 1911, CMU presently serves approximately 4,700 electric customers with seven substations and 115 miles of distribution line. The electric department is the largest part of CMU’s operating budget with projected revenues in 2022 of $10.9 million and $10.7 million in operating expenses. The water department’s operating budget for FY 2022 is $2.0 million in revenue and $2.0 million in expenses. The wastewater operating budget for 2022 is $1.4 million in revenue and $1.5 million in expenses. The refuse department is projected to operate within an operating budget of $1.2 in revenues and $1.2 in expenses for fiscal year ending 3/31/2022.

Chillicothe’s water supply comes from six alluvial wells, which replaced the Grand River as a water source in the early 1970’s. The water treatment plant has a capability of providing five million gallons per day and typically provides 1 ½-3 million gallons on average per day. CMU serves almost 4,000 water customers and has 90 miles of water main lines.

The wastewater treatment plant is a 3 million-gallon-per-day, activated sludge treatment facility. The system has 78 miles of sewer line and processes an average 1.5 million gallons per day. Our award-winning wastewater treatment plant uses a unique blend of traditional techniques and environmentally progressive innovation.
